School started on August 22 and I now have 3 school age kids!

Alex started 10th grade, Matthew started 2nd grade and Ryan started Kindergarten. It was so sweet of Alex to come to the elementary school and drop off her brothers.

A Glimpse at Summer

Since I'm sending the kids off to school tomorrow (and I haven't blogged all summer) I thought I would do a quick post about our summer.

We went to Surfside Beach, TX in July

The boys went on their first fishing trip with Dad in June (mommy got 4 days of mommy time)

My mom and Nephew came in for a visit in June, and the cousins had a blast together. We visited the Zoo and did lots of swimming

Pre-K Graduation

Ryan graduated from Pre-K back in mid May, they performed for us then their names were read and they received a certificate.

Art Show

Ryan's class had art week last week where they learned about several different artists including Matisse, Van Gogh and Jackson Pollock. The kids in the class decided to do an art show to raise money for Japan Relief. Here is an article published in the local online paper about the class:

5K

Alex and I (and some friends of mine) ran a 5K this weekend. It was fun but I was not as prepared as I should have been. I finished which is a huge accomplishment for me, I would not have been able to do this just 3 months ago. It was great knowing that my family would be waiting for me at the finish line.

Trunk or Treat

We had Trunk or Treat at our church on Wednesday night. The boys had fun getting candy and playing carnival games. I even managed to sneak a picture of Alex who was working one of the carnival games.

Cub Scouts

Matthew has joined Cub Scouts and has been having a great time. They've been to 2 meetings and they made a first aid kit at the last meeting. I think he looks quite handsome in his uniform.

High School Football

We attended the high school football game on Friday because Alex was performing with the Drill Team during halftime. The boys loved it! They asked today when we could go to another game.

State Fair of Texas

We attended the State Fair a couple of weeks ago and the boys had fun!

These first 2 pictures are of the boys on the DART train ride. We thought taking the train would be easier but so did a million other people, the trains were standing room only.

First Day of 1st Grade

Ryan finally went down the slide at the KC Pool, we've been trying since last summer to get him to go knowing that once he tried it he would love it. While in North Carolina we went swimming and we also visited Tweetise Railroad in Boone. The boys loved Tweetise! and we discovered that Matthew loves fast amusement park rides, he and I rode the Tilt A Whirl twice!

Trip to North Carolina

We drove to see Aaron's parents in North Carolina. We left on June 19 and arrived at their house on June 20. The boys did great on the 2 day drive, much better than I expected! They watched movies, took naps, played with their Leapsters and colored. We even played the License Plate game and found 32 states!

My baby boy you are turning 4 years old today, where did the time go?

The day you were born, oh what a long day that was. You were supposed to come quickly and easily just like your sister and brother but you were stubborn and wanted to stay a little longer. You were finally born by c-section (not mommy's favorite idea) at 7:01pm on May 1st. Your stubborn personality has been present ever since especially the older you get.

Aaron turned 39 today and I'm pretty sure the boys were way more excited about his birthday. They woke up talking about this morning and couldn't wait to give Daddy his presents. I managed to hold them off until 8:30 so Daddy could sleep in a little. The boys helped me make the cake yesterday and then I decorated it last night with a G for Georgia (since my hubby is obessessed with the Georgia Bulldogs. We went to dinner at Gordon Biersch then came home for cake.

Ryan had his dental work done today. It was much worse than originally thought, he ended up needing 2 root canals and crowns on 8 teeth. This picture is right after he got a shot of happy meds, within 2 minutes of the shot he was just blankly staring off into space which allowed the doctor to take him back. Once they took him back they started the IV anesthesia and then the dentist gave him Novocain. The anesthesiologist told us he would act drunk like when we got home and boy was he right! He kept asking me if I was mommy and if we were home. He has been kind of out of it all day, perking up every now and then for a few minutes. He's not complaining of any pain he's just very tired. He hasn't wanted me to leave his side much today.

I got around to painting my scrapbook room this week, and I love the color (it's called Spearmint). I have been enjoying having a scrapbook room and the boys have been doing great sharing a room. Now I just have to get some stuff up on the walls but that will come later. Aaron is going to build me some shelves this summer to go on one of the walls so I can store my albums and other materials.

Dallas got a record snow fall last week, 12.5 inches! The boys had so much fun playing in the snow, I hope they remember it since it will probably not snow like this again while they are little.

I figured since I haven't posted in awhile I would just do a "What's Up with our family" post.

Here's what's been happening over the last couple of weeks:

Took Ryan to his first dentist appointment because he was complaining of a toothaches, turns out he needs a root canal on 1 tooth and 3 crowns plus sealant on 5 teeth. Seems my boys have really deep grooves in their teeth. We will be going in on March 17 and because he is only 3 it requires him to have a pediatric anesthesiologist present so he could be put under.

We had a meeting at the Freshman Center last week to learn all about High School. Alex has all her classes picked out for next year. I am having a hard time believing she is going to be in high school next year!

Matthew had is 100th day if kindergarten on Thursday, they made a hat with a 100 on it and added 100 stickers. They also made party mix by counting 100 items to add to it.

Matthew also had his last basketball game today, will post pictures soon of that.

We got snow today! It's been snowing since about noon and hasn't really let up (it's now 8:15pm). Very rare occurance in Dallas especialy at Christmas time. There was a story on teh news just the other day about how Dallas has a less than 5% chance of having a White Christmas.

I made these for the boys teachers and I love how they turned out. I found the idea on Kelly's Korner which is another blog I read. They are so easy to make: you buy clear glass ornaments stuff them with shredded paper (like you would use for a gift basket). Tie a couple of ribbons to the top and then put a sticker with their initial on the front to monogram. Took me 30 minutes to make 8.

First Tooth Lost

Christmas Traditions

Kelly over at Kelly's Korner is doing a post today on What your family Christmas Traditions are.

We really only have one tradition and I started it with Alex when she was probably 4 or 5, every year the kids get to pick out a new ornament. I love getting them out every year especially Alex's because it's fun to see what they were in to that year.

This year:

Alex picked out Tinkerbell (she's 14 but is going through a Tinkerbell phase, this is the 2nd year in a row she picked out a Tinkerbell ornament).

Matthew picked out a Hot Wheels ornament and

Ryan picked out a Batman, which he quickly broke so Daddy has to fix Batman's leg.

I guess we do have another tradition, we always put up our Christmas decorations the day after Thanksgiving but I think alot of people do this.

Matthew and Aaron went to Georgia this past weekend so they could attend a Georgia football game (Matthew's first game). Matthew had a BLAST! And he did much better than this nervous mommy thought he would, he was tired but he handled it all like such a big boy (or so I was told).

Field Trip to the Arboretum

I went with Matthew (and his class) to the Arboretum on Wednesday. I think the highlight of the field trip for Matthew was getting to ride a school bus for the first time. I didn't get too many pictures but did get a couple of group shots and some of Matthew with his friend E'Colby (he was in our group). I was only responsible for Matthew and E'Colby but a few of the moms and I decided it would be more fun to walk around as a group (so the group shots are not his whole class just the few of us that walked together).

Update on Potty Training

Ryan is potty trained!!!!! He has only had one accident in a week and a half, can you believe it? He woke up one morning and just started going on the potty and hasn't turned back since, so crazy. So, after approximately 8 years of diapers (almost 6 straight years) we are diaper free is our house!

I took Ryan and our friend Becca to the Arboretum on Monday October 19. These were the only pictures I took because all they wanted to do was run in the field and then have a picnic.

Dentist

Matthew had his first of two dentist appointments today, he will be getting a total of 8 fillings. They did 4 today and will do the other 4 on November 13. He did great! We had to get there an hour before his appointment time so they could give him his happy juice, he was quite relaxed by the time he was called back. Once in the room it was apparent I needed to leave, he was starting to get a little anxious but the nurse said once I left he was just fine. She had me pick at him in the middle of his procedure and he was just lying there. He was a little grouchy when he was all done and he really didn't like his mouth being numb. They gave him gas plus 2 novacaine shots. He was so hungry because he couldn't eat or drink anything after midnight. We stopped at Sonic on our way to go pick up Ryan (he went to play at a friends house), Matthew got grilled cheese, apple slices and a chocolate milkshake. When we got home I have never seen him eat so fast, he ate every last crumb and drank the entire small milkshake! I don't have the heart to tell him he has to do this all again:(

Potty Training

We have gotten back into the swing of potty training Ryan since everyone in the house is well. He's been in big boy underwear for 2 days and has not yet gone on the potty. I am hoping if we stick with it he will decide to go in the potty and until then I will be doing laundry everyday.

I Don't Even Know How to Title This Post

We have had another interesting week at our house. Monday-Wednesday were fine. We went to church on Wednesday night for dinner and the boys had choir practice. We got home around 7:45 and Matthew started complaining of a sore throat then I noticed he was warm. Took his temp and of course he was running a fever. I called into work for Thursday, let's remember I only work 2 days a week and I have already used my 3 sick days for the school year and it's only October!

Thursday morning I drop Ryan off at preschool and Matthew and I are headed home when I get a phone call that Alex has passed out at school. I rush to the school and right after I arrive the paramedics arrive. They check her vitals and everything is normal so they decide she does not need to go to the hospital. I did take her home and get her to the doctor. I'm trying to keep this brief. the doctor did an exam and found nothing out of the ordinary. She related her passing out to something called Hair Grooming Syncope (one of her friends was braiding her hair). Her dad did some research and found that while yes you can pass out from someone grooming your day there is usually an underlying condition. We decided to take her to another doctor for another opinion. We saw the doctor yesterday morning, he did an exam then ordered some blood work. He also recommended that we take her to a Cardiologist for an Echo cardiogram. If that comes back normal he would like us to go to a Neurologist. We should have her blood work back by mid-week. I will keep the blog updated on what is going on with Alex.

Back to Matthew, poor kid had felt bad and I haven't been able to give him my full attention. I did take him to the doctor yesterday afternoon (so yes 2 doctor appointments in 1 day). He tested negative for the flu and for strep. I took him because I thought he might have strep since he was complaining so much about his throat. He seems a little better this morning, at least no fever.

Here's hoping we have a boring weekend.

As if having th swine flu in our house wasn't enough....

I took Alex to the doctor on Tuesday after school because she came out of school without a voice. The doctor diagnosed croup and laryngitis (sure I spelled that wrong). Ryan was diagnosed with swine flu on Wednesday morning then Wednesday evening Alex was having a hard time breathing so I took her to the ER. After several breathing treatments with little relief they admitted her. They tested her for the flu and other viruses and she had nothing. They sent us to an ENT and he did a scope and found her to have Vocal Cord Dysfunction. Basically what is happening is when she inhales insterad of her vocal cords opening they are closing. She will need spme speech therapy to retrain her vocal cords. Hoping to get into a Speech Pathologist sometime next week.

Swine Flu

Well it looks like we are not going to avoid the flu at our house-Ryan tested positive. I took him into the doctor today because he woke up running a 103 fever and seemed to be having trouble breathing. He is still on antibiotics for an ear infection that was diagnosed on Sunday. So now the rest of us are taking Tamiflu as a preventive so here's to hoping we do not get it. Ryan is supposed to stay home for 7 days, it's going to be a very long 7 days. He has started to perk up a little since his latest dose of Motrin. Here's to hoping he sleeps well tonight for both me and him!

Ryan's First Day of School

Ryan had his first day of school last Thursday, 9/3/09. He is now in the Preschool 3's class-what a big boy! He LOVES school and loves playing with his friends.

Kindergarten Here We Come

I won a free party at Emler Swim School and since it expired before any of the kids has a birthday we decided to throw a "Kindergarten Here We Come" party for Matthew and his friends. They had a blast swimming and playing their last Saturday before school starts.

Matthew received his postcard from his new Kindergarten teacher today! He was so excited! He will be in Mrs A's class along with his friend Ava. Their friend Drew will be in the class right next door. School starts Monday and Matthew is so excited he can't stand it, we'll see how he feels leaving the house at 7:35 Monday morning!

Ryan's Surgery

Ryan had his surgery today and everything went SUPER! We arrived at the surgery center at 5:45am and he was back in surgery by 6:45. We got to see him in recovery around 7:45 and we were home by 10. He has done great today, lots of sleeping and even some eating. They did find some very small nodules on his vocal cords, this explains the hoarseness of his voice that we hear sometimes. And his trachea was a little smaller than normal, they had to use a smaller breathing tube than they would normally on someone his size. As I write this he is asleep on the couch and has been for over an hour. We plan to stay for for the next few days since I have to be back at work on Tuesday.

Matthew had fun at his first sleepover and everything went great! I was a little nervous about whether he would go to sleep or decide he wanted to be home but he handled it like such a big boy. He had a much better time being there than he would have had if he had had to go with us this morning.

In One Week

One week from today I will send 2 of my kiddos off to their first day of school.

Alex will be an 8th grader and I don't think she's ready to go back, this based on the conversation I had with her earlier today. I told her "just think this time next week you'll be just about done with your first day of school" her response was "yes and I'll be one day closer to summer vacation." Funny girl!

Matthew on the other hand is VERY excited about Kindergarten. He keep saying Moss Haven is so cool! We will attend an ice cream social on Thursday afternoon, this is where the incoming Kindergarteners get to meet their teacher. We are anxiously awaiting the postcard from his teacher, he is very interested to know who is teacher is. Then on Saturday we will attend the Supply Sale at the school where he will also get to pick put a Moss Haven t-shirt!

Ryan will start his Preschool 3's class on September 3. He will have the same teacher Matthew had when he was 3.

I took Ryan to the ENT today because he has started snoring and I could tell his tonsils were swollen. He also hasn't been sleeping well, he doesn't wake up during the night but I can tell he doesn't get a good night's rest. So he will be having his tonsils removed on Wednesday. The doctor took one look in his throat and said wow those are big. HIs tonsils are so swollen they are touching each other in the middle, the doctor was amazed that he is still eating well.

Matthew will be excited because he is going to have his first sleep over with a friend, he is going to spend the night with a friend from church the night before Ryan's surgery and stay with them on Wednesday so I can focus on Ryan. Aaron is not going to be able to go with us because school is about to start on the 24th so he has alot of stuff to prepare for that.

Yummy Recipe (and kid friendly)

I was looking for something different to do with chicken and found this recipe online. The boys loved it and so did mom and dad.

Baked Chicken Nuggets

3 skinless, boneless chicken breasts
1 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 tablespoon basil
1/2 cup melted butter

1. Preheat oven to 400
2. Cut chicken breasts into 1 1/2 inch pieces. In medium bowl, mix together the bread crumbs, cheese, salt, thyme and basil. Mix well. Put melted butter in a bowl or dish for dipping.
3. Dip chicken pieces into melted butter first, then coat with the bread crumb mixture. Place well coated chicken pieces on a lightly greased cookie sheet in a single layer, and bake for 20 minutes.

We made it a completely kid friendly dinner by serving it with mac and cheese and grapes.

It's Friday so time for another Show Us Your Life, this week it's Wedding Party and Ceremony

From left to right we have: Kathleen (met her not long after my divorce and she was a great friend and a great help with my daughter), Jennifer (friends since 7th grade), Me, Katie (my sister), Cindy (another good friend that I've known for about 11 years) then my little girl Alex (who is not so little anymore, she is 13 and taller than me!)

I kept my flowers simple, I LOVED Gerber Daisies so that was my bouquet and of course Alex wanted what Mommy had then as you can see the other girls had roses.

A funny note: the jewelry I am wearing I borrowed from my ex-husbands wife (we are actually pretty good friends and they came to the wedding)

Here is a picture of the ceremony, my poor hubby had the sun in his eyes the entire ceremony! We got married on June 15, 2002 at the Dallas Arboretum.

Weekend

How was your weekend?

MIne was fabulous: I left around noon on Thursday and headed to McKinney with some friends for a weekend of scrapbooking. I know it doesn't sound like fun for some of you but it was GREAT for me! We laughed, scrapbooked and laughed some more. I got alot accomplished, 41 pages to be exact. When I got home on Sunday afternoon the boys were anxious to see me and everything I worked on.

My mom comes for a weeklong visit on Wednesday and the boys are beside themselves excited. We have no set plans just to have fun with Grandma!

Final Day at the Beach

Our final day on the beach was fun mostly sand castle building and shell searching. The water seemed chillier but it was a little hazy out so the sun was not beating down on us. Matthew had fun looking for shells and we have quite a collection to take home with us. I've enjoyed the week here but I am ready to get home (and I think the boys are ready too.
